Permits matter when you’re changing your home, particularly when adding a new roof. If the permit process is neglected, you, the homeowner, could be held liable for the consequences. This could include everything from municipal fines to insurance issues to even having to remove the new roof entirely.Inadequate Insurance
Beyond securing the proper permits, it’s also your remodeler’s job to secure adequate building insurance. Again, if they cut corners, you could be left paying for an injured contractor or various property damages. Ask for proof of insurance up-front, before hiring anyone – an honest contractor won’t be caught off guard.Forgotten Attic
Although it’s hidden beneath the rest of your roof, your attic is an important part of the entire roof’s system. Sufficient attic ventilation plans are a necessity. When your attic is neglected your energy costs will soar, your insulation will wear, and your shingles will weather poorly; bad news all around.

Cutting Installation Corners
Most roofing manufacturers provide precise instructions on how to install their products, even down to the number of nails required per shingle. Another warning sign to lookout for is a remodeler that uses mismatched shingles or installs new and old shingles together. In fact, in some areas, it’s illegal to install a new roof before inspecting and fully removing the old one!
